A new year is a time for making resolutions and setting goals to improve ourselves in some way. Some people promise themselves that they will eat healthier foods, or spend more time exercising. Others may set goals for their studies, their hobbies, or their personal relationships.
What about writing resolutions?
Whether you are a beginning writer or a professional who has published twenty books, there is always some way you can improve your writing. If one of your goals is to become a better writer in 2023, here are some strategies that can help.
Read more challenging books or articles.
Reading every day is one of the keys to improving your writing, and to improving your English in general. If you are already reading every day, challenge yourself in 2023 by choosing more difficult books or articles. For example, if you usually read articles about your area of interest, try a non-fiction book about that same subject. Perhaps 2023 is the year for you to tackle one of those thick, classic novels.
Write a certain number of words per day.
If you are an athlete or a musician, you know how important it is to practice, practice, and practice some more. It’s the same with writing. Set a goal to write every single day, and to write a certain number of words. (As a reference, this article is about 470 words long.)
Try a different kind of writing.
If you only write business emails or school papers, try something new in 2023. Maybe you are ready to transform one of your school papers into a scholarly journal article. Are you one of those people who always wanted to write a novel? 2023 is a great time to start it!
Join a writing group, or find one “writing buddy”.
If you feel stuck in the same place with your writing, getting feedback from someone else can really give you a big boost. You can find groups for writers at schools, bookstores, public libraries, or even online.
If joining a group doesn’t appeal to you, try to find one “writing buddy”. You can share your writing with this other person, and you can read what he/she has written. Of course, our editing team at TextRanch is also here to give you feedback on your writing.
Get organized!
As a writer, are you pretty good at spelling and grammar, but you want your emails or academic papers to be better organized? If so, your writing resolution for 2023 can be to spend some time learning about structuring an email or paper.
Organization is a topic that we will be exploring on this blog over the next few weeks. Therefore, if organizing your writing is one of your goals for 2023, help is on the way!
