Want to Improve Your Writing in 2025? Here’s How!

My New Year’s resolution was to quit smoking. I did really well for two whole days. Then on January 3rd, I smoked a cigarette. And another. And another…

I have decided to get fit in 2025! I joined a gym. I bought some workout clothes, a water bottle, and a designer gym bag. I haven’t actually gone to the gym yet, but I will someday.

I want to improve my writing skills in 2025. I know I should write a lot and read a lot. But what else can I do?

—Layla

At TextRanch, we can’t do much to help Rolando or Keiko with the New Year resolutions, although we certainly wish them the best. But if you are like Layla and you want to improve your English writing skills in 2025, you’ve come to the right place!

Below you will find three easy strategies to help you with your writing journey throughout the year.

1. Limit your use of AI tools.

“Use it or lose it” is a common English expression. How many of us took a subject in school, such as algebra or French, and then completely forgot everything we learned because we never used any of it after we graduated?

AI has a similar effect on people’s minds. If you become too dependent on AI tools to do your writing for you, your skills will eventually begin to deteriorate. If you want to stay sharp, you need to practice writing—without AI—on a regular basis.

Does this mean you shouldn’t use AI at all? No, AI is here to stay. It’s important to learn how to use it, regardless of your field. However, it’s better to do at least some of your writing by yourself.

2. Practice by writing online customer reviews.

Writing online reviews is a low-pressure way to help you practice organizing your thoughts, using persuasive language, expressing your opinions, and providing information in a clear, concise manner.

What types of reviews should you write, and where should you write them? It’s up to you. You can write reviews on major platforms such as Google, Facebook, and Amazon, or on retailers’ individual websites. Of course, you should pick someplace where you actually shop and write about a product you have actually purchased.

You don’t have to limit your reviews to products such as shoes, appliances, or sporting equipment. You can also write reviews for restaurants, movies, books, music, and service providers. Did a plumber recently come to your house after midnight to fix your broken toilet? Give them a glowing review online! Small/local businesses really appreciate good reviews. (So does TextRanch—you can leave a review for us at Trustpilot.)

3. Revise your old writing.

Do you have a drawer filled with old journals and first drafts of various stories you never had time to finish? Do you have school papers from three years ago taking up space in a folder on your laptop or stored in a cloud somewhere? Pull them out and take a look at them. You’ll probably be surprised at how far you’ve come!

“But when I look at my old writing, it makes me cringe!”

Yes, it can be embarrassing to read something you wrote when you were younger and less sophisticated. If it’s too painful for you to reread your middle school diary or those rap lyrics you penned in 1999, try something less personal. An old school paper that you had to finish in a hurry would be ideal.

Once you have read through your old text, think of ways to improve it. Then rewrite it. Correct any errors you might find and polish up the text so it reads more smoothly.

“I’m not the kind of person who saves things. I don’t have any really old writing stored away anywhere.”

Your “old” writing doesn’t need to be ancient. A work report from last year or a lengthy email from six months ago should be fine. Check your “sent messages” folder. You might find some buried treasures!
